We’re tipping that suicide doors will start appearing on a many and varied range of vehicles in the years to come. Why? Because they work. Passenger access and loading luggage into the rear is a cinch through the cavernous opening supplied by both doors.

Suspension modifications are restricted to new dampers front and rear, which Mazda claims improves initial damping and roll stiffness. Roll stiffness, yes, but the front-end now feels a little floaty and unsettled over undulations and rises.

The three-valve, four-cylinder engine feels more powerful than its 86kiloWatts would otherwise indicate. We tested the 1686kg dual cab, the heaviest of the range, equipped with a strong five speed manual gearbox.

There’s not a lot of tie-down options in the Bravo’s tray, and our luggage tended to slip around a bit. There’s obviously plenty of tonneau tiedowns that can be used for a load that’s taller than the tray’s sidewalls, but if you’re carrying smaller loads you may have to

The Bravo’s four wheel drive system is dead easy to use, a second stubby gearlever selecting 2wd, 4hi or 4lo. On the top-spec models the front wheel hubs are auto locking, and are released via a dash-mounted switch.

The Bravo’s cabin is a comfortable affair, even on the long trips we undertook. Regular five-hour drives, covering more than 400km, occurred every day. The steering wheel adjusts for tilt, and the driver’s seat reclines, inclines and adjusts for height, making it easy for the boss to get comfy.

Nissan Maxima What A Refined Car

The first thing that strikes you about the Nissan Maxima is its refinement and smoothness, with very little intrusion from any source on quiet conversation in the comfy cabin. It feels and looks well built and sits solidly, almost heavily, on the road.

The engine is a delightful unit, although it doesn’t pull the car off the line with any degree of urgency, and is perfect for comfortable cruising.

It is not a car designed to push hard along a country road. Although it maintains its line as requested by the direct and well weighted steering, the body roll and lack of seat support — especially with the leather trim — detracts from the experience.

The interior is very well finished and everything falls easily to hand and foot. There is plenty of storage and space for occupants, and the car lacks little equipment. The Maxima builds substantially on the attributes of its predecessor and does it with the added benefit of some visual appeal. It has also been given a substantial power boost, courtesy of the 500cc bigger, 3.5-litre V6, Three-quarter, side and rear views are its best vantage points, because with big tall headlights book-ending a wide grille, the front end visage makes the car look kind of skinny. It’s hardly a radical design, but it certainly makes it more contemporary and appealing.

The shape pitches the car into a broader potential market that may get Europhiles looking at it, as well as those who want solid, reliable and affordable Japanese prestige.

Inside, there is a greater departure from the traditional and it works nicely in conjunction with a cabin that delivers a very comfortable, quiet and refined ambience.

There is no doubting the Maxima is a comfortable car to drive and ride in. It has a suspension tune that has deliberately eschewed any degree of ’sportiness’, despite what may be hinted at by the more dynamic visual styling.
